Krishnaji Ganesh Phulambrikar (1898-1974) popularly known as Master Krishnarao or Master Krishna, was a leading light in the Hindustani classical music universe, indeed a boon bestowed on this world! Steeped in the traditions of his music gharana, and with outstanding voice control, he was a multifaceted artist - a musical genius! He always won audience's hearts during mehfil with his cheerful, witty disposition and one-of-its-kind creative style of music. He is credited with having created many complex (aprachalit or anwat raags) as well as composite-raags (jod raags) and composed many bandishes (fixed, melodic compositions in hindustani vocal music). A versatile presence on the Marathi stage, he traversed the worlds of acting, composing and singing with his immense creativity. To the world of Marathi film music, he brought pioneering creative experimentation. He was a loyal patriot, who served the nation through his music. Even today, his life and his music inspire researchers, musicians, and listeners, providing guidance and an inner spiritual bliss.
